If you have a flap on your pattern you are half-way there. The flap is usually either located so that it is right at the top of the pocket so that often the seam actually goes into the pocket. It is the same width as the pocket so you can "kind of" use the pocket as a guide. YOu need to decide the shape of the flap, often it has sides with a triangular bottom. Normally the flap is about 1/3 the length of the pocket when finished. Just be sure and allow for seam allowances as you go. Make your flap, adding interfacing as you go. You will have one piece interfacing, a top and an inside piece (can be lining, can be contrast, can be same material as the top) for each flap. and while it is still loose, you add your buttonhole. It can be a "regular" machine button hole or bound, depending upon what you want your other button holes to look like. It should be similar. Sometimes the buttons on the pockets are a little smaller than the buttons on the front...it is a matter of taste and style. You add the button the pocket after the pocket and flap have been added to the garment to make sure that the placement is correct. In most cases, if you have matching pockets on both sides of a coat and one has a flap, both will. However, if you have an odd pocket, like a breast pocket on just one side, it can have a flap even if the others do not, or vice versa.
