I'd like to make a Lily Munster costume for next year and have found "gossamer" in a catalog geared to decorating for parties, proms, etc. It's cheap and I figure I can makes lots of layers.

So, what IS Gossamer?

Does this sound like a good use or a bad idea?

This is a term that I've heard all my life so I guess that it is a very old fabric. I've always associated it (for some reason) with fine light weight vintage summer garments or night clothing. I found a definition. I hope this helps...

A very light, sheer, gauze (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gauze&action=edit)-like fabric (http://www.apparelsearch.com/Definitions/Fabric/FABRIC_definition.htm), popular for white wedding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_wedding) dresses and decorations I would also think that it was/is used in baby garments.

The gossamer we always ordered from the prom supply catalogs was a thin, non-woven poly material. Sort of like REALLY thin, colored interfacing. The last time I was in JoAnns they had a bolt of pink and a bolt of lilac in their clearance fabric.
