I was tired of not having my own space and so I went out and bought a 4x8' of formica and plywood. My brother in law anchored it to an old beat up 8' table and walla .. I LOVE IT

Another thing nice about a specific place is that I don't have to put everything away each time I'm done.. did that for YEARS while sewing for my children.

RIght now my dining room is my temporary sewing room. I have 2 bar tables and a small computer desk. My wooden bar table has my machine on it nad when I meed to iron I sshift my machine over to the ehdge and use a tabletop ironing board on it. My glass top bar table is where i put stuff i will be using (directions, peices to put together, seam ripper, etc) since while i'm sitting at the woden tanble i can just turn to the left and it's right there. My computer desk is used as storage but since my fiance is getting a new computer today I have to clean it off. s far as cutting out my pattern pieces I usually use my coffee table after the kids go to bed. I so miss my Superboard.
I have an extra bedroom (about the size if a walk in closet) that has been a storage room but I am cleaning it out (almsot done) so I can use it as a sewing room. I hoep to have everythign moved into before the end of next week.

I remember cutting out all my patterns on the floor .. oh those were the days! And yes like you used my dining room table -- take it all out .. put it all away .. take it out .. and on and on ;) I have a large family (9 children) so at one point we had to get a bigger table and actually bought a conference table .. 8' long .. it worked great !!!! still though I had to move things around for meals and such.

For sewing now I bought 2 of those 8' banquet tables like the churches use ?? I have a machine and serger on each and use armless computer chairs and just roll from one to the other !!! LOL

Question ? what is a superboard?

Question ? what is a superboard?

A "superboard" is the brand nam eof that 3 foot tall folding peice f cardboard to use for cutting paterns and fabric. I used my grandma's for a long time (on top of the old faithful dingin room table) adn then got my own. I lost it in a move a few years ago, and will be replacing it soon.

Well, right now I cut my patterns out on my superboard in my bed. Oh my aching back!

Many years past - I've used floors and dining room tables, for sewing apparrel. Like many of you...OH! my aching back!
In the process of redoing my sewing room, have a craft table which stands a good 3 feet high, what a life saver. Purchased a home-made U shaped sewing table. Could place up to 3 machines, or set up for simple pressing. It has a very small end-like table, wich drawers. Nice for storing all sewing essentials, 1 large draw for larger things. The other side is a storage cab., great place to place projects or whatever.

I currently use an old dining room table with a cutting mat and rotary blade (I haven't needed to use my superboard yet), but am already finding that there's no easy way for me to cut projects with it - if I'm standing, leaning over hurts my back and if I'm sitting, I can't see the fabric as well or apply as much pressure to make sure I cut through every layer of fabric. Pressing is turning out to be a challenge as well - the ironing board is closer to the right height, but I still have to lean over to iron fabric and press seams. Eventually, I'm going to have to find a better solution and it will likely involve elevated surfaces that are closer to my height (I'm 6'4" so that tends to be an issue with everything from cars to clothes).

Well, when you get old anything works. My husband bought me this giant ping pong table and it is awesome to lay ou fabric. The only problem is that I have to go out in the cold garage to use it!!!!!!!

Scott, what worked for me was to use sawhorses and an old door. I got those old-fashioned clamp-type sawhorse tops, the kind where you use 2 by 4's for legs, then I could control the height by cutting longer legs! I covered the old door with fabric (from fabric.com I might add) and it drapes down to the floor. I have storage under it for batting, boxes of fabric, etc. It's a long and narrow door, so my 3 ft mat fits perfectly. On either end, I have placed those medium size rubbermaid craft drawers for my tools.

Right now, it's doing double duty as a spare changing table, but all I have to do is removed the changing pad, and there's my mat ready to go!

If you have an Ikea near you, they also sell table tops and legs separately. They have a set of legs that is adjustable - that would work on an old or table top as well.

I have a portable cutting table that is fine, I do most of my cutting out with a rotary cutter. (I'm lazy!) But I always kind of think maybe I would go back to scissors if I had a table like my mom and grandmother. They make custom drapes and my dad built cutting tables for them. They have metal folding legs and the top is a sheet of plywood with a sheet of sheetrock on top. They've covered it with a heavy white canvas. They've put measuring marks on the side. I hate pinning and with these, you just stick the pins straight down into the sheetrock. I can't decide if cutting or pinning is a bigger chore. Ha Ha

I also use my dining room table because it does extend out quite far with the drop leaves. I use a cutting board that covers the table, purchased at Joann's, Hancock, or most chain sewing stores.

If my kitchen counter was long enough I would use my kitchen counter because it is taller then my dining room table which is a pain in the back.

I have a chest freezer and if it wasn't in the garage, I would use it.

I do have a fold up table in my sewing room I usually use to cut on. I could place the legs on blocks to raise it, but right now it is covered with my patterns as I am cataloging them slowly. This leaves me back to using the dining room table.

No matter which surface I am cutting on I use cardboard. Cardboard keeps me from scratching the surface or cutting the carpet or bedspread and keeps me from pinning down to the carpet or bedspread.

I wish I had the room to actually put a table in the middle of the room so can walk around it... oh and a table long enough to handle 3 yards of fabric at a time, pattern file cabinets, shelves to put my fabric on.... Now where did my Fairy Fabric GodMother get off to?
