I was wondering if anyone out there knows what the name of the material is that you make karate uniforms out of. I have some that I bought several years ago to make some uniforms for my son out of and I can't for the life of me remember what the name of it is. It is extremely strong fabric but not stiff and is 100% cotton I believe. It sews up beautifully and last forever, ( my son still wears the one I made him over 14 years ago.)

here is a start... my boys haven't been in Karate for many years but in my notes I have this...

Light weight

100% cotton twill
or
55% cotton and 45% polyester, permanent press fabric

Medium – Heavy weight (depending on the fabric weight)

100% brushed cotton

**white broadcloth can also be used

Preshrink the fabric before sewing.. I found that it shrank 3-5% on the 100% cottons and the poly/cotton blend though the shrinkage was negligible, I washed it anyway for good measure.

I acutally wash some fabrics like these two times in hot water and a hot dryer just to make sure it isn't going to shrink any further. I also boil the water and put the fabric in the stock pot or keep it folded and place it in the turkey roaster. If the fabric is more then my pots can handle then I use the sink. Ok so I am a bit of a nut case about this but I made something once upon a time, thought the hot water from my washer was enough... it wasn't. So on certain fabrics I am a bit overboard. It works for me.

I know there are other fabrics that can be used and with the limited types of fabrics being offered in fabric stores.. now gone mostly to quilting fabrics... our selection for clothing fabrics is at a minimum.

I hope there is other options then the ones I posted because Twill is hard to find, the poly/cotton blend is ok for light weight but to actually get the heavier weight cottons are few and far between.
