Making Pillows

I want to jazz up the outside of the pillow. How do you glue on cording with out the tape on it? I am new to this and I am not sure how to do it. Exactly how do you slip stitch the opening closed with out it being to loose and not so neat?

i just sew them very tightly, using the basting style...
